Food is fuel and should support an active lifestyle. Unfortunately in our culture today eating has become something we do not only when we need energy, but also when we are board, lonely, sad, stressed and of course at any and all holidays/celebration we can think up. The difference between the moments we eat because we need nourishment and these times is that if we are eating to fill the void of say loneliness or stress we are actually giving our bodies the wrong medicine. Not to mention the obvious stress we put on our digestive system and body when we overeat.
The first step in eating to live is just stopping long enough to ask yourself why you are going into the kitchen, or grabbing that second helping when you aren’t hungry anymore. Do a body check and take note of your emotions. If you are lonely take active steps this week to pursue friendships or relationships. If you are stressed be real about it and give yourself some down time. The list goes on and on, but the bottom line is medicate yourself properly. The truth is we already know the consequence of not listening to our bodies, and that is continuing down the nasty spiral of emotional eating.
Remember the goal is to be Happy, Healthy, Whole & Free. Getting to the root of our emotional eating is key if we are ever going to live free from the struggle of food.
